About Amanda Hill

I originally trained and practiced as an Occupational Therapist. This background gifted me with the understanding that art can heal, excite and motivate.
I believe that everyone has the ability to give rise to ideas creatively, however that may present. For me, it is about a visual expression of whatever invites curiosity, a provocation, a question.
I deem perception as personal. What I create on canvas may, and probably should mean something different to each observer.  I try not to "explain" my paintings. It is the viewer who makes sense of the work, thoughts which will be influenced by individual identity and experience.

In addition to telling stories with a brush, I also pen them. I achieved a Masters in creative writing in 2018 and I'm currently working on my first book . I have contributed stories and articles to several publications. The writing section of this website is slowly being developed, and will grow. I have included some short stories as well as chapters of the book.

I have travelled widely and my camera is always with me. I often take snaps of scenes I would like to paint, a kind of sketch or starting point. A photograph is immediate. The beauty of painting from a photograph is how that honesty can be teased and manipulated into something else. I think that perhaps all the "shock" effects of more than a century of abstract art have been quietly replicated somewhere in nature since time began.
